Photo Alchemy Opens Today

The 'Photo Alchemy' show opens today at
23 Sandy Gallery in Portland, USA

Galaxy 9, by Jo Bradford, 2011

This exhibition showcases the revival in alternative process photography. In recent years contemporary photographers have been taking a fresh look at early printing processes‚ from cyanotypes to daguerreotypes, these deep, dreamy images bring a unique style and surface to a photograph that can not be achieved digitally.

As the juror for this show, Laura Moya tells us, “I am delighted with the recent groundswell of photographers rediscovering historic and alternative processes. There is still an inherent need for some artists to use photography to explore the unexplained in life. The processes in this exhibit lend themselves to the exploration of memory, loss, and the unspoken. It hints at traces—of people, of objects, of ideas. Perhaps unknowingly, poetry becomes part of the image.

These new images explore the notion that the time spent ‘crafting’ a photograph versus ‘taking’ a photograph gives the photographer space for thought. If one is working with heavy lenses, glass plates, or a multitude of chemicals, time slows down. If one is considering how air temperature might affect one’s film, time really slows down. It is the complexity of these processes that bring gifts to the table.”

My photogram of meteorites, Galaxy 9 (above) was selected for the show by Laura Moya, the  Executive Director of Photolucida.  The work will be on show, alongside some very beautiful alternative photographic images, from artists around the world.

My art is going to space!!

My fluxface in space contribution

--------------------

Thought you might like to know about a little project I am involved in, where a digital copy of one of my meteorite photograms + a photo of me with my artwork will be launched into space onboard the final NASA space shuttle mission.

The Space Shuttle Endeavour (STS-134) will launch at 8:47pm BST on Friday 29th April 2011.  Here is a bit about the project.....

The Fluxface Exhibition Poster by Angela Ferrara

The "Fluxface in Space" exhibition is a commemorative project around the fact that the Space Shuttle program is coming to an end after this flight.  The exhibition is to be launched into orbit on the last Endeavour Space Shuttle mission in April 2011, this final mission will include a rendezvous with the International Space Station.

The 127 participating artists (from 26 nations) each created an original postcard sized work of art, in various media, interpreting the themes of Space Exploration & the Arts, the Shuttle Program, Outer Space, Rockets, Astronauts and Astronomy.

As my darkroom (photogram) art is made using meteorites, it seems only right that at some point it should go to space, as that's where it all originates from, well, you could say that about all of us too.  The organisers are heralding this as an historic exhibition as apparently this is the first international group art exhibition in space.

The exhibit is expected to travel around the surface of the world as well, while the digitised versions are touring space on board the Space Shuttle, the actual artworks will be exhibited in a touring exhibition here on earth.  In October 2010 the touring show kicks off at the Kennedy Space Station in Florida where the Launch will occur, after that it's next stop is at the Fort Worth Art Center in Texas, it will continue to tour the world and it is expected to be seen by many thousands in art centers, museums and other art gallery environments.

Your Feet

Grass Beneath My Feet by Jo Bradford
...
When I cannot look at your face
I look at your feet.......I love your feet

only because they walked
upon the earth and upon
the wind and upon the waters
until they found me.
...Excerpt lines from Your Feet ~ Pablo Neruda...
Well, it has been a few weeks since I last shared some Pablo with you :)   xoxo

Be my Rock

This is one of a several pieces I have made recently. Just after sunset, I set myself up on the cliff edge, with the wind howling, snuggled deep into my down jacket. I left my shutter open long enough to catch the moody sea washing across the rocks in the darkening evening light.

Rainy Days Mixed Tape

Blue Butterflies by Jo Bradford

My work has been selected for Poppytalk Handmade this month. The theme is Mixed Tape! ~ A compilation of those wonderful Poppytalk Handmade peeps, Jan & Earl's, favorite things from emerging design talent from around the world. The market will feature papergoods, affordable art, ceramics, housewares, gifts and jewelry and will be running Sep 08 - Oct 10, 2008.

This is my third Poppytalk market this year. This time I was inspired by the rain (kind of).
Although it has been an unbelievably wet summer this year, I am not letting it get me down. I have been making the most of what is around me for inspiration, and recently it's been big seas, storm clouds and raindrops. The best thing about lots of rain during the warm months, is that Cornwall has never looked so verdant, the rich greens in the landscape are gorgeous and inspirational... it's a jungle out there!!

Sea Fever

..

I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,

And the wheel's kick and the wind's song

and the white sail's shaking,

And a grey mist on the sea's face,

and a grey dawn breaking.

..
I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide

Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;

And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,

And the flung spray and the blown spume,

and the sea-gulls crying.

..
I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,

To the gull's way and the whale's way

where the wind's like a whetted knife;

And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover

And quiet sleep and a sweet dream

when the long trick's over.

..

Life Is But A Many Hued Reflection

The rainbow mirrors human aims and action.
Think, and more clearly wilt thou grasp it, seeing
Life is but light in many-hued reflection.
~ Goethe
"Life is but light in many hued reflection" is from a series of 7 images of bubbles I made while exploring notions of transience and the human condition.

The Diaphanous Blue

The Diaphanous Blue by Jo Bradford

I have been so tied up with making new work recently, that I have not blogged anything for some time. Watch this space for sneak previews of my new work, but in the meantime, this is Diaphanous Blue, a personal favourite.

Big Blue Sea

Big Blue Sea by Jo Bradford
This is my newest listing to my Green Island Art shop - I took it on Sunday - I was in the dunes with my dog, enjoying the sun and these glimpses of the ocean through the long grass.
