Hopes and aspirations

I have been working with this beautiful young lady recently.  Harriet commissioned me to create a new portfolio of images for her, she is hoping to break into the world of plus size modelling and will be taking her new portfolio to Paris and New York soon.

I think she has a wonderful career ahead of her - she is both lovely to work with and drop dead gorgeous too!

Good luck Harriet!!

Dusky Light

...
Dreams in the dusk,
Only dreams closing the day
And with the day’s close going back
To the gray things, the dark things,
The far, deep things of dreamland.
Excerpt from Dreams in The Dusk by Carl Sandburg

Can't see the wood for the trees

At FrauWaldi's suggestion, she and I have made a diptych of of our polaroids this week for the polanoid diptych project. I think the weird bluey greens of my expired 669 film shot here in Cornwall go very well with FrauWaldis chocolate film shot in the Black Forest, Germany.....

waves pound the shore

Waves pound the shore by Jo Bradford
...
I have just finished reconditioning one of my collection of vintage typewriters. This one is an Imperial Good Companion 4, a lovely little lightweight machine with a retro sparkly metallic turquoise green finish. I love how light the keys actions are considering it is a machine from the early 1960's. After typing up a few poems and to do lists, I started pulling prints off the wall and typing on them yesterday afternoon, as you can see from the TTV picture above. The text on this picture (of my local surfspot known as the Badlands) is a lovely quote (surprisingly, perhaps?) by Mohammed Ali.

Monkeys Wedding

Growing up in Africa, there is a funny describing those weirdly wonderful weather moments when the sun is shining and it rains lightly as a "monkeys wedding". As kids, we would shout this with glee, whenever we experienced a sunshower. I always pictured in my minds eye a host of well dressed monkeys celebrating their unions in the trees, wearing white lace and top hats and tails.

The expression is what linguists call a loan translation of the Zulu "umshado wezinkawu", meaning a wedding for monkeys. Similar sayings or proverbs exist in a surprising number of languages it turns out. A great many of them have animal associations, often to do with marriage (or that activity for which the word marriage may be considered a suitable euphemism!).

Michael Quinion, in "World Wide Words", goes on to say that in Arabic, they say “the rats are getting married”, while Bulgarians prefer to speak of bears doing so; in Hindi it becomes “the jackal’s wedding”; in Calabria, it is said that “when it rains with sun, the foxes are getting married”, for which there’s a similar phrase in Japanese; Koreans refer to tigers likewise; there’s even an English dialect term, “the foxes’ wedding”, known to come from right here in the South West of Britain it seems.
No-one seems to know how, where or why the expression arose. There’s clearly a common association understood and in use by widely divergent language communities, so it seems to be something at a level below that of superficial culture. But what is it?

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!!

We are rarely blessed with snow in Cornwall, in fact it happens about once every four years. To us seasiders it's such a big deal when the white stuff arrives, that we afford it the same status as a national holiday.

We were lucky enough to have a few inches of snowfall this week, so most people took the day off work and hit the local slopes with anything they could possibly utilise as a toboggan. Great fun was had by all!!

Translucent

Translucent by Jo Bradford

I have been enjoying immersing myself in my photography in my studio these last few weeks. The front area of my studio has large north facing windows, an artists dream from a lighting point of view. I am also lucky to have a wonderful plant nursery in the shared yard at my studio workshop space. I often scrape together my pennies and pop into the greenhouse to see what delights have been nurtured there by the loving hands of Mary and John, whose business it is. I loved this shoot I did last week as the early evening light in my studio was filling the room with a warm glow. The translucent petals were positively radiating coloured light as I worked, and the scene filling my lens was rather reminiscent of stained glass windows.

The Creek

The Creek by Jo Bradford
A 10 minute trip from my studio, this is a great place to escape for the afternoon in search of inspiration.
